The introduction describes the characteristics of the third book and deals with the questions of its chronology, the themes and the order of the epigrams, the different dedications and the textual tradition both in manuscript and in print. The text of the epigrams is a critical edition based on a complete autopsy of manuscript and printed versions. A parallel translation is provided to give an initial orientation in view of the often difficult interpretations of the poet's verses. Each epigram is followed by an introductory note offering a general interpretation of the poem, highlighting the presence of various themes of Greek and Latin literature in Martial's work and examining prosopographical issues.
